What about the importance of enzymes for good health? Dr. Wong places great emphasis on them (www.totalityofbeing.com/index.html)

Answer: from Warren Matthews of Xtend-Life

I agree with Dr Wong that enzymes are crucial for many processes in the body and the lack of them can prevent our body from receiving the benefits of many nutrients.

He also rightly points out that enzymes are expensive and cannot survive exposure to stomach acid which is why they are rarely seen in Supplements.

We use a lot of specialized enzymes of various types in most of our products, in particular Total Balance, Cardio-Klenz and Arthrit-Eze.

They range from proprietary brands which we buy from the National Enzyme Company in the US which are called IsolaseTM and IsolaseTM PRO, another specialized range of enzymes from another US manufacturer called Enzidase, through to the standard enzymes such as Bromelain, Lipase, Amylase, Papain, Nattokinase, Serrapeptidase.

Each of these enzymes have different functions depending upon what the objective of the supplement is that the ingredients that are being used.

For example, we use different enzymes in Total Balance Women's Plus compared to Total Balance Men's Plus and again compared to Total Balance Unisex.

They are different again in Cardio-Klenz and Arthrit-Eze.

What is critical about enzymes is where you get them from. We source most of ours from the National Enzyme Co in the US. They are more expensive but the quality is unrivaled. We fly them out to our facility in New Zealand and then they are kept in sealed containers and refrigerated to 4 degrees C.

When we combine them with other nutrients the entire blending/tableting process is done the same day. We then seal them with enteric coating. This way none of the effectiveness of the enzymes is lost.

On the subject of enteric coating! Dr Wong is right on the mark when he says that enzymes get damaged by stomach acid and they must be protected. However, he is a little misleading when he suggests that enteric coating can get damaged in the bottle and thus reduce its efficacy. There may be a slight element of truth in this statement for solvent based enteric coating which only has about 2 - 3% coverage of the tablet.

However, we use the latest technology by a US company Colorcon which is an aqueous form at around 8 - 10% coverage. The tablets can be 'thrown around' but not fracture the coating which is an inert polymer and flexible. We have never ever had one of our enteric coated tablet fail.

Every batch is tested based on the British Pharmacopoeia. Dr Wong uses a different type of process which is a type of enteric coating but involves granulation of the enzymes and excipients which is sprayed by an enteric coating solution.

We considered that technology some while ago but dismissed it because the process could compromise the potency of the enzymes.

I am glad that you raised this issue Rick, because it is just another area which consumers don't really understand and thus don't appreciate the benefits of many of our Supplements. Maybe this explanation will help somewhat.

By the way, I think that Dr Wong’s enzyme product is incredibly expensive. We have just as many enzymes in some of our products and yet they only amount to a small fraction of the total.

Also, we know that the quality of the enzymes we use are 100%. We have been offered enzymes from China for a fraction of the cost we are paying from the US manufacturers but we will not be tempted.
